The Algarve - Portugal

Madeira is a green subtropical paradise of volcanic origin, completely different from the Portuguese mainland. The island has an equitable daytime temperature that varies by only a few degrees either side of 20° and has all-year-round appeal. This week will allow you to discover the true Madeira away from the popular tourist centres and to spend time on the unspoilt north coast which sees relatively few visitors or walkers.

Arrival and transfer to Machico a small town on the east coast.

A very easy start to this great week with a walk along the Levada do Canical, through the Machico valley. You pass between shady wooded hill sides and terraces growing fruit and vegetables, 13km / 8.2miles.

Today we journey across the top of the island to walk along the high plateau of the Paul da Serra with it fabulous views,  and then we follow the levada do Paul, 13km / 8.2miles.

We journey high to Portela before walking downhill along an old forest trail with views down to the sea, then through hamlets to the levada Castelejo which we follow to the village of Cruz. After the walk we will visit Porto da Cruz on the coast, 14km / 8.8miles

A free day (time to visit Funchal?) or for those who wish we will spend a half day walking the spectacular Sao Lourenco peninsular with its colourful cliff formations, 8km / 5miles

Today we visit the south and a stroll along the Levada da Calheta - Ponta da Pargo as it contours the sun drenched plains above the coast. To your left you have superb views up to the Paul da Serra, to your right an ever changing seascape. After the walk we will visit the fishing village of Paul do Mar 10km / 6.5miles

For our final walk we drive to the village of Achada and walk through forests to meet the levada del Rei to walk to Ribeira Bonita where the levada begins. After the levada we pass through hamlets on our way to visit the old mill which is powered by water from the levada and watch the miller grind 'milho' corn 13km / 8.1miles
