Walking holidays in Portugal
The Algarve

The ‘Via Algarviana – the Algarve Way’ was inaugurated in May 2009. It is a fully way marked long distance footpath between Alcoutim on the Spanish border and Cape St. Vincent (the most south-westerly point in Europe) and the Via Algarviana now forms part of the European network of walking routes as the most westerly extension of the GR13. The walking is challenging mainly because of the distances involved but if these do seem too much we can start you each day further along the trail. Our holiday allows you the opportunity to experience the last 130km of this 240km trail offering you a wide variety of walking from mountains to cliff tops and very much more in between. This walking holiday is only for those with a good overall level of fitness.

Arrival in the Algarve either by plane or train and a transfer to Silves. Overnight Silves.

Transfer after breakfast to the start of the days walk at Messines. The route today takes you through a wide variety of scenery from low lying limestone hills to the orange groves at the centre of the Algarve’s fruit industry and passing by the Funcho and Arade lakes, 27.6km / 17.25 miles. Overnight Silves.

A challenging day today as you climb 500m to the town of Monchique but you are rewarded with some magnificent vistas along the way both down to the coast and northwards into the Alentejo, 28.2km / 17.62 miles. Overnight Monchique.

After yesterday’s exertions today is a breeze! Up and over the highest point in the Algarve (904m) and down to the traditional mountain village of Marmalete where we will meet you and take you to your hotel, 14.7km / 9.18 miles. Overnight Monchique.

Transfer after breakfast to the start of the trail which is long but downhill passing through the foothills of the Serra de Monchique where traditional agriculture is still practised and along the shores of the Bravura Lake to the small town of Bensafrim. Here we will meet you and take you to your hotel, 30.0km / 18.75 miles. Overnight Lagos.

Back to Bensafrim after breakfast where you begin your walk through the Serra de Cao, much of today is along the ridge that runs parallel to the sea. The scenery is fabulous and the countryside unspoilt except for one section which has been used for wind turbines (part of Portugal’s policy of environmentally friendly energy sources). You finish at the town of Vila do Bispo, 30.19km / 18.90 miles. Overnight Vila do Bispo.

The final day is along the Sagres peninsula, easy almost flat walking that takes you to the ‘End of the World’ – Cape St Vincent and its awe inspiring cliffs where we will meet you and take you to your hotel in Sagres, 17.65km / 11.03 miles. Overnight Sagres.

Transfer back to your departure point.
