This self-guided walk allows you to explore much of the centre and eastern half of the island, taking you essentially on a circular route from Funchal up to the north coast and back through the high peaks that dominate the centre of the island. On days 2 & 5 you walk to your hotel, on the remaining days you return by local bus but we do provide bus times!

Arrival at Funchal airport and transfer to your hotel in Camacha, overnight Camacha.

(You take the local bus to Monte) A walk from the famous village of Monte with its historical church and beautiful gardens back to Camacha. This levada walk is beautiful all year round but in the summer months it is particularly glorious with the drangeas and lilies, 12.5km/8miles, overnight in Camacha.

(Minibus transfer to the start) A varied walk between rocky outcrops along the Levada do Furado, before dropping down onto lush pasture. Along the walk there are breathtaking views down to the coast, 14km /8.5miles. Overnight in Machico.

(You take the local bus to and from this walk) The spectacular north coast is the destination today, wild, rugged and very beautiful, 13km/ 8.2miles, overnight in Machico.

(Minibus transfer to the start) Today you follow the levada do Caldeirao Verde (Green Cauldron) the sides of the levada are swathed in heath trees and laurels creating wonderful plays of light and shade, 18km/11.2miles. Overnight in Santana.

(Minibus transfer to the start) Time to head for the mountains and a walk along the levadas and through the tunnels to Folhadal (the place of the lily of the valley trees), 13km/8.2miles. Overnight in Encumeada.

(Minibus transfer to the start) An easy walk along the Levada do Norte with great views down to the coast, this is the perfect way to wind down from an action packed week, 16km/10miles, overnight Funchal.

Transfer back to the airport in Funchal.
